Project Overview
At the beginning of Black History Month, we began our exploration into a Collage piece that would show Black History, Black Culture, and/or Black Excellence. First, we explored using shapes and symbols to represent different thoughts and ideas. Then, students chose at least 3 shapes or symbols that they would incorporate into their final piece. The plan originally was to include an artist statement where students explained their symbols and meanings; unfortunately, Covid-19 disrupted that process. Students then decided on their subject, and found a digital image or drew their own illustration of that subject. Students chose celebrities, musicians, artists, rappers, actors, activists, themselves, and even family members. Then, we embarked on creating the background, using acrylic paint applied to a thick chipboard. Many students who reached this stage are featured in our "Work in Progress" category on this site. Students then carefully cut out their subjects and their symbols, and arranged them on their background. Lastly, students used glue to collage their pieces onto the background, attempting to show a high level of Craftsmanship in their final product.
Students: if you see a piece that says, "No Name," and it is something you created, please let me know ASAP so that you can received proper credit!
