Dear Family, Friends, and Supporters,
On behalf of our school and our UPAD community, we want to thank you all for officially visiting our virtual space to amplify our students’ voices and celebrate their artistic expression. For the past 9 years, for one night only, we have opened our doors for Detroit’s largest K-12 visual art/design exhibition, our annual Night of the Arts. Due to the limitations presented by COVID-19, our art department ideated and innovated, deciding to truly amplify our students’ voices, sharing their work indefinitely with the world. We are thrilled to welcome you to our first ever, virtual Night of the Arts. In the celebration of our students’ work, we have created a store to sell some of their designs for you to bring into your own spaces.
One of my favorite things about NOTA is how our students’ work provides evidence of rigor and showcases the wide array of mediums our school offers. NOTA highlights our students’ personal voices as we can visually see their thoughts, feelings, passions and struggles through their work. It also highlights our teachers as facilitators who truly care about each of their students’ creations because without their hard work and dedication as they put this show together, scanning one image at a time, we would not have been able to celebrate our student artists. Our school is on a mission to dismantle white supremacy, and to celebrate Black excellence. Our art department lives out that vision through guiding our students to liberate their voices. We believe that art is a universal language that anyone can understand. It provokes emotion, it captivates thoughts, it internalizes feelings through an image, and it colors our walls. Let your walls speak with our students’ liberation.
Through your support, our students are empowered to continue sharing their talents and voices, as a portion of the profits go directly to them, while the other portion goes to ensuring our art department can provide students with the materials & equipment needed for the rigorous and liberating art education they deserve.
We are proud to share NOTA, our first virtual website. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Manal Kadry

About University Prep Art and DesignA public school in a public space. Students and families will find that University Prep Art and Design is different from other middle and high schools. That's by design. UPAD is a key element in an integrated community located at the historic Argonaut building in Detroit's New Center area where creative people as young as sixth grade can grow and thrive.
Our focus is on engaging students and preparing them for the future through strong academics, a college-going culture, intensive art and design preparation, and real world experiences that focus on innovation and creativity. Each year, every student takes art and design as a part of the core curriculum. Our partner, the College for Creative Studies (CCS), provides dual enrollment opportunities for our most advanced students who are interested in pursuing post-secondary art studies. Students also have the opportunity to incorporate art and design in to their other subject area classes through various projects. The world is in need of critical thinkers and problem solvers, people who can produce new ideas and create new solutions. UPAD allows for this and as a public institution, all students attend tuition-free. |
The UPAD High and Middle School Art Department placed a call for artwork to spotlight the artistic creations that our scholar have been making during this unprecedented time. We are using this as a way to celebrate and honor our students' boundless creativity and dedication to the Arts.
